NY OpenIDEO Meet-Ups: Let’s work together on the upcoming OpenIDEO College Affordability Challenge
By Nicole Cote / October 4, 2015
Design for America NYU will host research and ideation workshops (October 15th and November 5th) for the upcoming OpenIDEO challenge:
HOW MIGHT WE RE-IMAGINE THE COST OF COLLEGE IN THE U.S. AND HOW IT’S PAID FOR
For those who don’t know: IDEO is a leading international design and innovation consulting firm whose work utilizes human-centered design. OpenIDEO is an open innovation platform where the public (it means you too!) can help enact social change!
The challenge invites us to reimagine how to make higher education more accessible, especially for lower-income students, by getting creative about how, when, and by whom programs are paid for. We would like to explore alternatives that cut across cultures, countries, industries, and sectors, as we envision a world in which every young person who wants to earn a bachelor’s degree, can.
As college students and as members of Design for America (DFA)—an award-winning nationwide network of interdisciplinary student teams and community members using human-centered design to create local and social impact—we believe it is an important and timely challenge that our society needs to address. We hope you’ll come and join us in researching this topic further and brainstorming creative solutions that can help addressing this burning issue.
Although it is an important problem in the US (as the price of higher education is undeniably skyrocketing), this is also a global issue, as “in the face of continued increases in participation, demographic change and – in the West at least – profound fiscal crises, higher education institutions are increasingly being required to raise funds from students as opposed to relying on transfers from governments.”
Why you should attend:
- The challenge and meet-ups will allow you to play a part in enacting social change in an area that desperately needs to be re-considered for the needs of current and future students.
- This is a comprehensive challenge and requires a holistic and systemic view that you as a service designer can provide.
- This is also a great opportunity to learn and expand your network!
Whether you’re a college student today or were 3, 5, or 10 years ago, your perspective matters and can really help us to come up with better and more viable solutions.
